NOTE: RESPONDING TO THE DEFENSE BY SOME PROTESTANTS OF THE HARRIET MIERS NOMINATION BY PRESIDENT BUSH:
It is with a heavy heart that I feel compelled to insert this note of warning. I do so speaking as both a Catholic, and a Conservative. As a Catholic we are instructed by Vatican II to reach out to all Faiths in a spirit of ecumenicism, while at the same time instructed not to compromise the fundamental teachings of the Church. As a Conservative, I am guided by principle, not fashion, and reality, not wishful thinking. Thusly, real world events require me to put the cards on the table concerning my Protestant brothers, carefully. By definition, from the point of inception, Protestants have come in all theological and political shapes and sizes, cut loose from a certain intellectual discipline. In an age of moral and intellectual ambiguity, so it is that Catholics, certainly in recent years, have suffered similar problems, and I will speak of that elsewhere when it is time to do so. With respect toProtestants, generally speaking, the theology encourages a certain wandering of the mind, an intellectual straying habit, if you will, and a sloppiness of cognitive power that lowers defenses against collectivist ideology, i.e. socialism. So it is that much of the American Protestant world has slipped the noose politically, drifting into the welcoming arms of the Liberal Left, confusing the Christian message of responsibility to God, and to each other with the intellectual chaos of multiculturalism and moral relativism. This is not to say that all Protestants so suffer, but to be on guard concerning everything they have to say, for it is occasionally disconnected. A whiff of this problem surfaced publicly during the Harriet Miers court nomination brouhaha, simply as an absence of penetrating analysis, and can be expected to do so again. I would prefer otherwise. JES

05/27/06 NOTE: It is with even a heavier heart that, as a Conservative, I must be up front in acknowledging that a similar intellectual and moral straying, if you will, has infected the Roman Catholic Church, particularly in Europe and the United States, at least over the course of the last 40 years. We trust that Pope Benedict XVI will prove to be an anecdote on a road to recovery. For me not to acknowedge this would suggest hypocrisy in my comments above. JES
