10/30/07  Certain things are going right (pun convenient) for Conservatives.  The surge is working and good things are happening in Iraq.  New French President Nicolas Sarkozy is actually making some progress, both at home and through Europe, in providing the first vestige of genuine leadership on the continent in decades, so relevant to our interests as the approaching confrontation with Iran unfolds.  Belgium is in an advanced state of collapse, as it ought to be, a further sign of the ultimate idiocy of the super statist European Union.  Likewise, our own Democrat led Congress, both the House and the Senate, are also in an advanced state of collapse in terms of accomplishing anything more damaging than the dedication of post offices.  This Congress is still very dangerous in terms of the damage it seeks to do, and could do with the complicity of too many RINO Republicans, however, overall conservative GOP forces have done remarkably well since the 2006 election debacle in fending off the Leftist onslaught.  The continuing defeats of Leftist and Libertarian efforts to award amnesty to illegal immigrants high on the list.  It is a huge help to Conservatives that the American Left has become publicly unhinged in ways that has exposed the Left as it always truly was.  It is likely that the 2008 elections will come down to the question of balance between the appeal of what remains of traditional American instincts and conservative values, and, on the other hand, the now decades old siren song of government freebies and nannyism.  How powerful is the appeal of Hillary Rodham, aka Nurse Ratchet?  Is it reading too much into the discussion to consider the implications of victory of now governor-elect Bobby Jindal in Louisiana, Indian American, as Conservative as you can find?  Does American sanity still have a chance?   JES

10/04/07  The President properly vetoes the attempted 5 year $35 billion increase in spending for SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program).   This pre-election year trojan horse for universal socialized medicine had nothing to do with either "the children", or "the poor".  This precursor to universal Stalinist medicine was actually Nurse Ratchet, aka Hillary Rodham, running around loose, and says everything you need to know about those who supported it, Democrat and "Republican".  JES

09/12/07  In the polls, Fred is rising like a rocket, now ahead of Giuliani among most likely Republican primary voters.  Go to http://www.rasmussenreports.com/.  Click on The Thompson Bounce.   JES

09/05/07  Fred's in the race: "I'm running for President of the United States of America".  Fred has been criticized by some who contend he has waited too long to announce.  Actually, the timing is early by historical standards.   I would wonder at the timing of the announcements of other candidates, Democrat and Republican; way, way early.  All this early activity reflects the depth of polarization of politics today in the United States.  You will hear Fred speak much of "security, unity and prosperity" in the months ahead, as he addresses a key concern about the threat to the United States occasioned by international IslamicFacism.  He will also take on the difficult task of directly addressing the brick wall of entitlement spending towards which the nation is racing.  His calculation is that the ordinary voter is better prepared to consider the problems of terrorism and big government entitlements than the politicians.  For more, got to http://www.fred08.com.  The Mountain Observer supports this candidacy as representing the best ELECTABLE option for Conservatives in 2008.  We shall see.  JES

06/29/07  “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race,” quotes Chief Justice John Roberts.  In a predictable 5/4 decision, the Supreme Court finally begins to unravel perhaps the original modern Liberal activist court decision from 1954: Brown s. Board of Education.    The damage over the decades of this social engineering experiment has been, and is, incalculable.  JES

06/29/07  Yesterday, in the Senate, the great McCain/ Kennedy/ Bush Amnesty "compromise" plan of 2007 for illegal wetbacks and terrorists of various heritages came to a halt.  Finally.  Mr. President, now go and enforce the law.  Shut down the circus on the border.  And I want to see some employers go straight to jail.  You have the tools to do this, and have had all along.  Now just go do it and quit protecting your corporate, Democrat and RINO friends.  JES, American Nationalist Conservative.

06/20/07  The President gets one right with his veto of legislation attempting to authorize tax payer support of embryonic stem cell research.  The President, and all Conservatives, support adult stem cell research, where all the progress is being made.  Embryonic stem cell research, which is legal if privately funded, technically is going nowhere, hence the starvation of private funding, hence the attempted raid on the public treasury.  However, there is a larger issue at work here.  Supporters of embryonic stem cell research know full well that it is a technical bust; their real agenda is promotion of the idea that human embryos are not human so as to bolster their real agenda of abortion rights.  That this is what the discussion is really all about is not arguable.  JES

06/06/07   GO FRED GO

Go straight to www.imwithfred.com, and do not look back.  JES

06/04/07    GO FRED GO  Fire up that old red pickup truck.  Let's Go!                   Go to http://draftfredthompson.com/ .    or,  TOPICAL GUIDE AMERICAN POLITICS FRED THOMPSON

04/18/07  Finally Conservatives are making progress on the abortion front.  The Supreme Court sustains a challenge to the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act signed into law in 2003 by President Bush.  Infanticide is unconstitutional: imagine that.  JES

03/16/07  I am off the trucks.  I am home to stay, here in Jefferson, Park County, Colorado, USA.  Over the last 16 years I have seen the USA to the extent of probably some 1.75 million miles, all 48 contiguous states; a priceless experience.   I have met the American people, face to face, an experience frequently gratifying however too often disturbing.  Originalist Americans have a tussle before them.  God help the USA.  JES

03/12/07  Add ex-Senator, Fred Thompson, R-TN, to the list of Mountain Observer qualified 2008 presidential candidates.  An impressive idea I had forgotten about.  Go to ELECTIONS 2008.   JES

01/22/07   As a Conservative, I have been harshly critical of the Bush administration's domestic policies and agendas.   I must, however, confess to one error of judgment on my part early on, and that concerns my apprehension over the President's nomination of Elaine Chao as Secretary of Labor.  My concern at the time, fearing her intentions and motives coupled with a Bush tendency to be blind to the intentions of his enemies, was her many contacts and associations with the unions and union labor leadership.  Happily, it appears that I was wrong in those concerns.  Elaine's tenure has been hugely successful, and a positive for Conservatives.  My apologies to her and the President.  JES

12/22/06  A long time ago I suggested that the sleeper Conservative candidate for President might be South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.   I think this is the right guy for 2008.  His major problem is that nobody knows him, yet.  If you consider yourself to be a serious Conservative, and not a GOP toady, do some research and get acquainted.  JES

11/20/06  Today is the 6th anniversary of the launch of the Mountain Observer.  So much has happened.  Jesus Christ has been very good to me; much more so than I deserve.  JES

07/19/06  The President does the right thing and vetoes the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, just passed by Congress, concerning federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.  Anybody who has followed this discussion over a stretch of time knows that this has not so much to do with science but rather with the funding of scientists and the pursuit of the principle that life does not start at conception.   There are far more scientifically promising avenues open for stem cell research which can only lead to the conclusion that those who insist on focusing on an embryo, however it is engineered, really have a more distant political agenda.  If you want to pursue the medical promises of stem cells, the science shows you need not invade human embryos, artificial or otherwise.  If you insist on doing this, then you are up to something else altogether.   Those in Congress who supported this bill either are smart enough to understand this, and are either cowards or cheap panderers, or are so stupid that they are unworthy of their office.   In contrast, the President, you know that stupid cowboy from Texas,  stood up and said "NO".  God bless cowboys.  JES

06/17/06  Congratulations are in order for Philadelphia restaurateur Joe Vento, who insists that his customers order in English.  A real American.  JES

01/31/06   Congratulations United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. JES

01/29/06   Expect Supreme Court nominee Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. to be confirmed by the full Senate this week, including by a handful of Democrats who know better, as Associate Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. United States Supreme Court.   We still need a couple of more like him.  God Bless America, and President George W. Bush.  JES

01/26/06  Congratulations are in order for the Conservative Party of Canada.  Stephen Harper's party prevails over the Liberals, returning sensible leadership to power after a 17 year drought.  We look forward to working with a friendlier Canada, as it ought to be.  For more details keep checking with www.cbc.ca/news   JES

01/14/05  After Alito, we need at least one more qualified Conservative on the bench.   Then, perhaps, we can begin to see the signs of stare reversalis  -- the Sohmer doctrine that unconstitutional mistakes need to be fixed.   JES

01/12/06  The inquisition of Supreme Court nominee Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. by the Senate Judiciary Committee is over, and Democrats have again exposed themselves for who they really are to the public at large.  This is important, because it is events like this that shape the results of future elections, the consequences of which will continue to shape the courts.  So what we have seen this past week is the contrast between a highly qualified, highly intelligent and judicially experienced nominee of integrity, and the ravings of a pack of wolves lead by Democrat Party Ethicists:

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-MA, The Swimmer and Senate expert on water-boarding,

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-NY, who steals social security numbers for personal investigations,

Sen. Richard J. Durbin, D-IL, , Cheerleader for Lenin, Stalin and Pol Pot,

and Senator Joseph Biden, D-DE the plagiarist.

You see, Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr's. "crime" is that he personally is a Conservative, the danger of which is that he might rule on the law and the Constitution in the originalist sense, foregoing policy instruction and social engineering, the art form of Liberal activists.  This leaves our Democrat ethicists, and the raving mob that supports them, apoplectic.   It's all sort of fun to watch.  The good Judge will be confirmed.  We need a couple more like him.  JES

12/27/05  I am remiss in failing to acknowledge in a timely manner, the 50th anniversary of National Review magazine on October 6.

For many years it has been a standard for myself against which to calibrate my thoughts on many matters, even when some disagreement was apparent.   I first stumbled across William F. Buckley, Jr. in the 1970's, and began to pay attention to his wisdom.  He is unlikely to ever know his own success in breaking an old mule.   Thank you, Mr. Buckley, from the bottom of my heart.   JES

10/20/05  Manufacturers of all kinds, and defenders of private property rights, won a huge victory in Congress with the passage of legislation protecting the firearms industry from lawsuits brought by victims of the mis-use of their products by third parties.  The passage of this legislation adds major muscle to a more comprehensive effort by Conservatives to affect tort reform, and to re-construct the principle of actual personal responsibility as opposed to anybody in sight with deep pockets.

The immediate purpose of the legislation greatly strengthens the 2nd Amendment rights of American citizens, law enforcement, and our national security apparatus, from politically inspired mis-use of the civil justice system by those who would otherwise seize any opportunity to tie up a legal industry in knots. The real purpose of gun opponents has been bankruptcy of the industry, another Liberal attempt to gain through Court procedures what they could not accomplish in Congress.  Their strategy was not a legal victory they knew they could not, in the end, win.  Their strategy was to drown the firearms industry with the legal costs of defense against outrageous claims.  Thank you, and congratulations to, the National Rifle Association, the nation’s only real civil rights organization.    JES

07/09/05  To be effective, it is important for Conservatives to recognize the need to defend, advance and re-capture for the country, as best possible, the vision and the principles of the founders, as distinguished from a return to the past in the absolute sense, technically impossible.  It is also necessary to be careful, and clear, in our use of words, so as to make sure that we are saying what we actually mean to say.  It can be tough.   JES

04/19/05   Our Lord breaths on Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, of Germany, as Pope Benedict XVI, April 19, 2005.  I see this as a very positive development for the American Church, and its continuing recovery from recent scandal.  It is believed by the Mountain Observer that Pope Benedict XVI will not suffer fools, theological equivocation, or administrative laxity.  Certain American pro-abortion "Catholic" politicians may finally be forced to make some long over-due choices, and more general congregants re-think the relativistic back-sliding that has befallen the entire culture in recent years.  JES

04/08/05 Kansans vote for tradition marriage, without compromise.  JES

04/08/05  Pope John Paul II has been laid to rest, as millions give thanks for his guidance and leadership and pray for the final salvation of his soul.  JES

04/02/05  John Paul II, born Karol Joseph Wojtyla, of Poland, and finally of the whole world, Passed from this world to a higher reward on this date at 9:37 p.m. Vatican time (2:37 p.m. EST).  He was 84.  John Paul II, a pivotal figure of the 20th century, will be sorely missed by millions.  May he rest in peace.   JES

NOTE: Non-Christians will not understand why these comments about the Pope are under VICTORIES and not DISCONTENTS.  The Pope's victories belong to all of humanity, including his passing to a higher life.

MO 04 08    Americans, wiser and older than in 1992, shift Right, however slightly.  JES
